John Hartzel

John Hartzel, 82, of Macungie, passed away on August 11, 2026. Born on September 27, 1943, in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, John was the son of the late George and Mary (Concannon) Hartzel. He graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1961 and proudly served in the United States Army.

In the late 1970s, John began a 26-year career in the brewing industry at Schaefer Brewing Company, now Samuel Adams Brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. He loved making beer, drinking beer, and spending time with family and friends. After retirement, he volunteered with Meals on Wheels for more than 20 years. He was also a longtime member of the Cathedral Church of Saint Catherine of Siena.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Loni (Hartman) Hartzel, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage. He also leaves behind two daughters: Tara Grather of Orefield, her husband, Mike, and daughter, Daisy; and Laura Mory of Allentown, her husband, Brian McCarthy, and children, Andrew, Olivia, and Nathan.

John is also survived by his siblings, George Hartzel, Mary Ellen Moser, and James Hartzel. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Angela Hartzel, Sally Bogdan, Catherine Hartzel, and Thomas Hartzel.

A calling hour will be held on Saturday, September 12th, at the Cathedral Church of Saint Catherine of Siena in Allentown beginning at 10:00 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial immediately following at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley.
