THE REVEREND MONSIGNOR ALFRED R. OTT Pastor Emeritus, Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena, Allentown, died on Friday, October 31, 2014, in Holy Family Villa, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was 83 years of age. A native of Philadelphia, Monsignor Ott was the son of the late Alfred A. Ott and Gertrude (Mayer) Ott. He is survived by nieces and nephews: Brian Sheridan and wife Colleen, Williamstown, NJ; Michael Sheridan, Bensalem; Denise Durant and husband Robert, Williamstown, NJ, and Lisa Sheridan, Philadelphia. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanette (Ott) Sheridan. Monsignor Ott attended Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parochial School and Northeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia. He studied for the Priesthood at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook. He was ordained to the Priesthood on May 14, 1960 by the Most Reverend J. Carroll McCormick at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia. Monsignor Ott's first Priestly assignment was Parochial Vicar, Saint Paul Church, Reading, followed by Parochial Vicar, Saint Anne Church, Bethlehem, and Administrator, Saint Ambrose Church, Schuylkill Haven. He then was named Pastor to Saint Ambrose Church, his first pastoral assignment, followed by Pastor, Sacred Heart, West Reading, then Pastor, Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena, Allentown, where he remained until his retirement in 2003 when Monsignor Ott was named Pastor Emeritus, Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena, Allentown. During the course of his Priestly Ministry, Monsignor Ott held the following Auxiliary Diocesan Assignments: Vicar Forane, Lehigh Deanery; Regional Scout Chaplain, Berks Deanery; Diocesan Director, Catholic Youth Organization; Member, Diocesan Liturgical Commission; Member, Diocesan Board of Education; Pastor Representative, Council of Priests and College of Consultors; Chaplain, Serra Club, Reading; Member, Diocesan Building Committee; Pro-Life Coordinator, Berks Deanery; Member, Budget Board, Holy Name High School, Reading; Member, Advisory Board, Holy Name High School, Reading; Chaplain, Serra Club, Allentown; Pro-Life Coordinator, Lehigh Deanery, and Diocesan Negotiating Team for Lehigh Deanery. Monsignor Ott was named a Prelate of His Holiness by Pope John Paul II, in 1990. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus in the Bishop Welsh Assembly # 931 and a member of Calvary Council # 528 in Allentown and Chaplin of Reading and Allentown Serra Clubs. FUNERAL MASS A Mass of Christian Burial for Monsignor Ott will be celebrated at the Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena, 1825 W Turner Street, Allentown, on Thursday, November 6, 2014, at 11:00 AM. The Main Celebrant will be His Excellency, the Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of Allentown. The Reverend Monsignor Thomas E. Hoban, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Ann Church, Emmaus, will be the Homilist. Main Concelebrants will be the Most Reverend Edward P. Cullen, Bishop Emeritus of Allentown; Reverend Monsignor Gerald E. Gobitas, Secretary for Clergy, Chancellor, and Rector, Holy Family Villa; the Reverend Monsignor Andrew R. Baker, Rector, Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena, Allentown; Reverend Monsignor Anthony F. Wassel, Pastor Emeritus, Assumption B.V.M., Sacred Heart, and Saint Joseph Churches, Mahanoy City; Reverend Edwin V. Schwartz, Pastor Emeritus, Our Lady of Hungary and Saint Michael Churches, Northampton; Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Orsulak, Pastor, Saint Peter the Apostle Church, Reading, and Reverend Monsignor Thomas E. Hoban. VIGIL SERVICE The Vigil Service will be on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at the Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena, Allentown, at 7:30 PM. The Reverend Monsignor Daniel Yenushosky, Dean of Lehigh Deanery, will preside. The Homilist will be Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Orsulak. CALLING HOURS Calling hours will be in the Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena, Allentown, on Wednesday, November 5, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, and on Thursday, November 6, before Mass from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM.
