Sr Verna Meckes, age 97, passed away at Phoebe Home in Allentown, PA on April 14, 2022. She was born in Allentown, PA to Alvin & Hattie (Hefflefinger) Sell on July 10,1924. Verna graduated from Allen High School in 1942. On February 19,1949 she was united in marriage to Roy Meckes, they made their home in Laury's Station, PA. She worked at Bretz's Cleaners while being a youth leader at St John's Union Church in Laury's Station. Working with the youth was her calling at the age of 49, Verna went to college at Luther Crest, NJ to become a Lutheran Deaconess. While there she was the Dean of Women. She interned in Hoboken, NJ and taught at-risk children in the area. She received her calling to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Allentown, PA. At this time, she also was ordained as a Deaconess on Feb. 23,1975 to be a youth leader, this was a true gift to us all. Left to cherish her memory are son, Dale Sr. (Claudine) in Blue Earth, MN, daughter-in-law, Susan (Roy) Pittsfield, PA, sister, Janet (Carl) Dankle, sister-in-law, Althea (Wesley) Sell, sister-in-law, Jeannie (Herbert) Sell and 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Verna was preceded in death by her husband Roy, infant daughter Susan, son Roy, grandson Jarret Meckes and by siblings: Kenneth, Herman, Hurbert, Wesley, Emmerson and sister Grace.
